Jason and Rene from USA visited Rectory Farm and Cambridge recently and wanted to know what to do while in Cambridge.

We suggested they visit the American Cemetery in Madingley. One of only two in the country it commemorates the many brave US servicemen who gave their lives in the Second World War. True to form the Americans have spent loads of money and done a fantastic job bringing important history to life and making it more exciting and relevant to today’s audience.

Fewer and fewer people have surviving relatives and friends from the war and today’s younger audience is more used to interactive and visual display. The brilliant new visitor centre has really expanded the exhibition and makes a great day out from Rectory Farm, just a mile down the road. Loads of history and background information about the war campaigns and the huge contribution to the war effort by the US.

The Cambridge tour bus visits regularly during the day and stops off for tea on the way back, just round the corner, at the Coton Orchard. Well done American Battle Monuments Commission. Terrific job!
